Apple Music just turned 10. That’s a whole decade since it launched back on June 30, 2015 - back when some of us still had aux cords and thought streaming was a phase. To celebrate, Apple dropped a few new things, including a “Replay All Time” playlist - a top of the songs you’ve streamed since the day you signed up.

Naturally, I had to check mine. And well, two things stood out right away:

First, I am definitely a dad now. There’s no denying it when the soundtrack of your life includes The Lion King, Lilo & Stitch, and Paw Patrol. “Hakuna Matata” is no longer a nostalgia hit - it’s background music. I probably hum it more than I realize.

Second, - my own music taste hasn’t really budged since I was in my youth. Wu-Tang Clan still kicks in there. So does Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead and Oasis. The gang's all here. Seems like once your musical DNA is set, it doesn’t change much - just gets passed down, like bedtime stories and questionable jokes.

And that got me thinking: no wonder so many of us say music was better back in the day. It wasn’t just the music - it was our music. The anthems of late nights, road trips and heartbreaks. Now, we get to pass that playlist on to the next generation.

So, dads - open up your All Time playlist. Relive the glory days. Cringe at your guilty pleasures. Smile at the songs that are there now because of your kid. It’s a musical time machine, and you’ll be glad you took the ride.

It also reminded me how important it is to pass down decent music taste to your kids. One day, they'll say “they don’t make music like they used to” - and you’ll be much happier if that doesn't mean Cardi B.

Rock on, dads.
