This one wasn’t exactly on the agenda - let’s call it a little push from the universe.
Here in Amsterdam (and in plenty of other corners of the Kingdom), Saturdays mean market day. Some of us wake up to the clatter of crates and tents as the street markets rolls in. Folks set up their stalls and by the time you’ve had your first sip of coffee, it’s all happening - dutch cheese, stacks of veggies, smelly fish, a hummus guy standing next to an asian grandma frying her spring rolls. It’s everything you did and didn’t know you needed for a Saturday morning.

In my neighbourhood there is also a coffee guy, that sells coffee beans from Italy and he also makes coffee right on the spot, and that's where I had my first cappuccino of the day today. While I was sitting there (it's a sunny day in Amsterdam today) the guy started to sing, not really sing, but more mumble the Bee Gees's "Staying Alive” song. And I froze for a second - coffee halfway to my mouth - because the moment felt straight out of a movie. Like, full-on Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, with Ryan Gosling selling olive oil at the greek stand. I half-expected the whole market to burst into song, people tossing apples and stuff in the air, and me in the middle of it all with my silly little cup of cappuccino.
Of course, none of that happened. But it did make me smile - and honestly, might just be the highlight of my day. So I’m sharing it here, hoping it might make you smile too. Sometimes, that’s all it takes to make the rest of the day go a little easier.
Rise and shine, dads, wherever you are.
